Lettuce (Valerianella locusta) is a species of lettuce (Valerianella) in the genus Valerianella, subfamily Valerianoideae. It is also popularly known as bird's lettuce and lettuce of the genus Lactuca, but these are partly misleading: the plant is not a member of the genus Lettuce (Lactuca), but is a salad plant, i.e. its leaves are commonly eaten as a salad or as part of a salad.
It is an annual herbaceous plant that grows to a height of 10-25 cm. It starts growing in autumn and overwinters, making it an early spring plant. The lower leaves, which are in a rosette of bracts, are lobed, the stem leaves lanceolate. The pale blue flowers open in April and May and are clustered in clusters. The developing fruits are acorns, compressed on both sides, with a broadly rounded, slightly ovate shape, completely glabrous or only very slightly flaky on the surface, and two or more flat ribs on the sides. The fruit is tripartite in cross-section, with the central central compartment containing the seed, one of the outer compartments being barren, i.e. empty, and the other being filled with spongy material.
