Moringa oleifera - Miracle tree, Drumstick tree, Horse chestnut tree, Hogwood
Originally a tree native to the foothills of the Himalayas, it is now widely cultivated throughout the world for its very significant medicinal properties. In fact, it is the most useful tree in the tropics, and in some places it is called the miracle tree. Its leaves, fruit, flowers and even its roots are edible and have healing properties. The protein content of its leaves is about 10%.
Its leaves are 2-3 times stalked, its flowers are white or red in colour, and its fruit is quite long, with seeds the size of hazelnuts. Its seeds are pressed into Behen oil. Its root has a strong sagu and pungent taste like horseradish, so it is also used as a spice. Its leaves are also used to make stew.
From its stem flows a tragan-like honey.
The plant contains 92 essential nutrients and 46 antioxidants and is a natural source of iron and calcium.
Minimum temperature : -6°C
Cultivation:
Can be grown in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in a sunny place. Very fast growing, flowering almost a year after germination. Germination is expected after about 2 weeks.
